Christmas music

on

I need some help.

My Christmas music library currently consists of two Amy Grant Christmas CDs that I love dearly; a copy of the "Home Alone" soundtrack, of which I like some songs and not others; and Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," which is awesome but not exactly something you can sing along with.

I have had these same Christmas CDs for many years. I'd like to add something new this year, but I don't want to randomly go buy just any Christmas CD, in case it is lame and I end up back where I started but $15 poorer.

My musical taste runs toward the simple, melodic, and fun to sing along with. I don't like jazz, hip-hop or hard rock, and only a little bit of country. Am I being too picky? I hope not.

So: what are your favorite Christmas albums? Please share with me. You will make my holiday season that much merrier.

Wow! That's a sparse collection. Okay, I think I can help you here. Find a CD with a collection of old forties and fifties singers. Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, even Rosemary Clooney. Then pick up Josh Groban's Noel CD and find a CD with nothing but orchestral (like London Brass) christmas music. If you're feeling adventurous, try Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas CD. Not sure? I have each one! I'll lend you some and you can try them to see what you like.

For me, it's not Christmas without Johnny Mathis. Ella Fitzgerald has a few great Christmas collections, too. And don't forget John Denver and the Muppets!

Oh Jen, that makes me so sad! My Christmas music collection is so large and continues to grow each year! I definitely think you need to get some of the "oldies." You know, a little Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, etc. Other good ones are the two Point of Grace ones. You can't go wrong with Christmas with the Chipmunks. I'm also a HUGE fan of Transiberian Orchestra, but that's a little "rocky." Jars of Clay also has a good Christmas CD. Kohl's has a great CD for Christmas, it's only $5, money goes to charity, and it's just Bing and Frank. It's excellent.

hey there.. I by no means have a wide variety of christmas music... in fact I only have one whose whereabouts I can locate (is that weird grammar??).. but I really like it. It's called It's Christmas Time from City on a Hill (a compilation of christian artists). I like it because it has some traditional songs and some less known ones, but it's got a fresh kind of a sound to it. (Until you've listened to it every day for 3 weeks straight like I will be doing. :))

We've got some great compilations with forties and fifties singers, the soundtrack to 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' which is great, I love the Jackson Five's 'Santa Claus is coming to town' but my fave is a CD we got on holiday in Bahamas one December - it's called Junkanoo Christmas, and it's traditional and local Christmas songs done with an island beat - so fun, and breaks up the traditional stuff! Get shopping!

We too, enjoy the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, although it is jazz. Some other Christmas favorites of ours are: Kenny G, Harry Connick Jr, Mariah Carey, Christmas with the Supremes and The Temptations, Squirrel Nut Zippers (Christmas Caravan),Bing Crosby and those other classic guys, Elvis Christmas Album and we do even have Christmas with the Brady Bunch-it is terrible! I just downloaded Savior, the Soverign Grace Christmas album.

Also, there are some radio stations that play all Christmas songs this time of year and can be a great way to listen and see what you like. And one other tip, we buy/have bought most of our Christmas albums from the bargain bins or we buy older albums that are cheaper than the current releases.

The City on a Hill Christmas sounds like a good one!
